Planning a Common App essay begins with a real experience you can reflect on clearly. Your school board, exam preparation, family responsibilities, or interests may provide context, but the useful question is what the experience reveals about your choices and growth.

Read the current prompt before drafting
Common App has published its first-year essay prompts for 2026–2027. Read the official prompt and the instructions in your application. Check whether each institution also requests programme-specific or other supplemental writing.
This guide offers a planning method; it does not reproduce the full prompts, assign a guaranteed successful topic, or claim that a particular essay secured admission.
Make a three-story inventory
Choose three genuine experiences. For each, write four short notes:
| Note | What to capture |
|---|---|
| Situation | A specific moment or problem |
| Choice | What you decided to do |
| Action | What you actually did |
| Reflection | What changed in your understanding |
Look for an experience with concrete actions and meaningful reflection. A small experience can be useful if it helps a reader understand your thinking. You do not need to manufacture a dramatic event.
Explain unfamiliar context briefly
If you mention an Indian examination, school role, local organisation, or family arrangement, give only the context needed to understand your actions. Avoid using most of the essay to explain an examination system when the point is how you responded to a challenge.
Describe your actual role precisely. If you contributed to a group project, separate your contribution from the group's overall work. If an activity was informal, explain what you did rather than inflating it into a larger organisation.
Not sure which path is right? Compare colleges and trade schools near you with real salary data.
Try the Calculator →Draft around the decision and reflection
A useful outline is: a concrete opening moment, enough context to understand it, your decisions and actions, and what you learned or reconsidered. The structure should serve the story rather than force every experience into the same dramatic pattern.
Ask a trusted reader two questions: “What did you learn about me?” and “Which part was unclear?” Use feedback to improve clarity while preserving your voice. Check the application's own rules for assistance, authorship, and submission.
Review the final version against the prompt
Confirm that it answers the selected prompt, stays within the displayed limit, and contains accurate details. Read it beside your activity descriptions to spot unnecessary repetition or inconsistent claims.
Use the US application plan to separate essay work from other requirements, and the recommendation preparation guide to organise the real examples other people can discuss.
