Quick Answer

A current engineering student can help you understand daily academic life, the adjustment to college, and questions an official brochure leaves unanswered. A structured conversation is more useful than asking whether a campus is simply “good.

A current engineering student can help you understand daily academic life, the adjustment to college, and questions an official brochure leaves unanswered. A structured conversation is more useful than asking whether a campus is simply “good.”

Begin with context

Ask which campus, degree, branch, and year the person is studying in. If you discuss admissions, also ask which intake and route they used. Their experience may concern a different programme or a past set of rules.

You can seek confirmation of student status without collecting their identity documents or publishing personal information. An introduction through a trusted school, department, or student organisation can also provide context. Treat any account you cannot verify accordingly.

Ask about academic life

  • Which first-year subject or assignment surprised you?
  • What does a typical week of classes and independent work look like?
  • How do students seek help with a difficult course?
  • What did you do to explore a subject outside compulsory coursework?

Follow up with “Can you describe an example?” Specific experiences are easier to evaluate than broad claims such as “the teaching is excellent.”

Ask about planning and costs

  • Which expense did your first budget miss?
  • What living arrangement did you choose, and what affected that choice?
  • Which travel or equipment needs should a new student investigate?
  • Which office answered your fee or scholarship questions?

Use the answers to improve your own questions and estimates. Confirm official fees, eligibility, and award terms directly with the institution.

Ask about their admission journey carefully

Invite the student to describe their route, documents, preparation decisions, and something they would do differently. Do not ask them to share passwords, application numbers, private documents, or other people's records.

One student's marks or rank cannot establish your admission probability. If a rule or cutoff comes up, record the year and relevant programme context, then check the official source.

Save the answers in a structured note

Use four sections: academic experience, living and costs, admission journey, and advice for a new student. Mark each statement as personal experience, official information to verify, or an unanswered question.

Ask permission before publishing their name, quotations, photograph, or story. A private planning conversation does not automatically authorise a public profile. You can still use the conversation to identify the next question for the department or admissions office.

Compare your options in the India campus explorer, then use the branch-versus-college worksheet to connect the answers to your own priorities.

Use JoSAA's institution directory to find official campus websites for checking programme and admissions information. Personal experience and current institutional policy serve different purposes in your research.
