A JoSAA research worksheet helps you explain why one campus-and-programme combination belongs above another. Prepare it before entering your official choices so that your list reflects your priorities and the current rules you have verified.

Use programmes as the unit of comparison

Create a separate row for each exact institution and academic programme. Several programmes at one institution are different choices. Record the official programme name rather than an informal abbreviation that could be confused with a different degree.

Add the admission cycle, source link, and date checked to the worksheet. If you consult past seat-allocation data, include the year, round, and relevant seat or category conditions alongside the number. Comparing rows without those details can be misleading.

Make this worksheet your research layer

FieldWhat to record
Campus and programmeExact official names
Academic fitCurriculum and department link
CostCurrent programme-specific fees and living-cost estimate
Practical fitTravel, housing, accessibility, and support needs
Eligibility questionThe condition still to verify
Preference reasonWhy this option belongs here
Official actionWhat the current portal says you must do

The worksheet is not a substitute for the official portal. Use the current JoSAA rules for how choices, allocation rounds, willingness options, payments, and reporting actions work. Do not copy an older year's procedural instructions into a new cycle.

Separate preference from speculation

Suppose you prefer Programme A because its curriculum matches your interests, but a friend thinks Programme B is easier to obtain. Put those into different columns: your preference reason and the historical information you have checked. An estimate about availability should not silently replace your reason for wanting to study a programme.

If two choices remain close, write one question that could change their order. It might be about a laboratory sequence, hostel costs, language support, or a required subject. Seek an answer from the relevant department or office.

Review the list with someone who understands your constraints

Ask a parent, counselor, or trusted teacher to review the reasons, missing information, and cost assumptions. They do not need to assign your preferences. Their useful role is to spot an overlooked constraint or an unsupported assumption.

Then compare your research list with the current official instructions and confirm every action in the portal yourself. Keep proof of completed actions in a clearly named folder.

Start your campus research in the India directory. For a programme choice that is still unclear, use the engineering branch decision guide.

Official reference

JoSAA's official institution directory identifies institutions and links to their websites. Follow the authority's current notices and business rules for your intake.
