Quick Answer

Choosing between IIT, NIT, and BITS begins with the programme you want, the admission route you can pursue, and the cost your family can support. A familiar institution name is useful context, but your actual decision is about a particular branch at a particular campus.

Choosing between IIT, NIT, and BITS begins with the programme you want, the admission route you can pursue, and the cost your family can support. A familiar institution name is useful context, but your actual decision is about a particular branch at a particular campus.

Start with the admission route

For the usual undergraduate engineering route, IIT options involve JEE Advanced and JoSAA; NIT options involve JEE Main and JoSAA; BITS has its own admissions process, including BITSAT. These labels describe common routes, not every degree or alternative admission channel. Use the current official rules for your nationality, school qualifications, programme, and intake.

The official pages linked below currently include 2026-cycle material. If you are preparing for a later intake, keep the route as a research starting point and replace the eligibility rules and dates when that intake's notices appear.

Compare programme and campus separately

Write one row for each option: campus, degree, branch, admissions route, annual cost, and your reason for considering it. “IIT” is too broad for a row. “A specific engineering programme at IIT Bombay” is a decision you can investigate.

Look at the department's curriculum before making a preference list. Mark the compulsory subjects you would enjoy studying and the ones you would find difficult. Check how much room the degree offers for electives or interdisciplinary work. Treat a potential branch change as uncertain until you have read the institution's current policy.

Leave a cost blank until you have a programme-specific official fee schedule. A fee figure for another campus, year, or student category can give the wrong impression.

Make your priorities explicit

Imagine two students choosing the same three campuses. One wants a particular engineering subject and is comfortable living far from home. The other has a firm household budget and needs manageable travel. Their preference orders can reasonably differ.

Choose your three most important priorities before you start comparing offers. This helps you separate evidence from pressure from friends, relatives, or a ranking list. It also gives your family a clear explanation of your choices.

Start with GradeToGrad's India campus explorer. It covers 25 selected engineering campuses and lets you compare location and common admission routes. Read the branch-versus-college worksheet next if two options have different programmes.
